C-Span: Democratic Convention Location

August 19, 2008

Live feed from C-Span2, scouting the Denver location of next week’s Democratic Party Convention. Interesting to see the proximity of the convention center and the stadium where Obama will deliver his acceptance speech. And you just know the nearby amusement park, with its roller coaster, is going to be used as a metaphor by an endless number of reporters . . .

UFO?

July 30, 2008

Indian Qikker BeingTarak seems to have come up with a new use for Qik technology: capturing video images of ephemeral phenomena. Now, frankly, this just looks like a plane with wing lights but ooooooooooooooooooo you never know. Anyway, if you do happen to use your Qikked cellphone to capture that elusive image of the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot or Martians, try to also capture some surrounding geographic features in order to show context, scale, etc.

A quick pan of the newsroom at the Sacramento Bee. It’s a long ways from the days of open desks and aisles, clattering Royal typewriters, the concussion of the pressurized tubes carrying stories from editorial to composing, and reporters shouting “Copyboy!” to scurrying pages . . .

June 5, 2008

Our friend Michael Arrington tries to explain to Google, that emblem of New Media, that barring videos but allowing note-taking at a company press conference is completely nuts. Google, as is increasingly the case these days, is inflexible. BTW, take it from this 30 year newspaper veteran: those skinny reporter’s notebooks are worthless. . .
